Een van de boeken die momenteel mijn hersenen verwennen, is 'Reis naar de toekomst' van Michio Kaku. Deze 70 jarige Amerikaanse theoretisch natuurkundige heeft een belangrijk deel van zijn wetenschappelijke carrière geïnvesteerd in onderzoek naar 'de theorie van alles' of 'unificatietheorie' die de verschillende fundamentele modellen van de natuurkunde verenigt in één allesomvattend model. Zelfs Einstein is daar niet in geslaagd en het lijkt er op dat ook Kaku in het zand zal bijten. Neemt niet weg dat de mens, die in zijn vrije tijd ook futurist is, er in slaagt om complexe zaken helder voor te stellen zoals ook nieuwe inzichten in het brein. Een aanrader.Kaku gaat in dit boek in op het fenomeen dat we de adsorptiesnelheid van nieuwe technologie overschatten en vooral ook de impact van nieuwe technologie op het verdwijnen van bestaande. Voorbeelden zijn er legio. Het papierloos kantoor is perfect mogelijk, maar papierverbruik zit nog steeds in de lift. Winkelcentra zouden bankroet gaan, omdat alles on-line zou worden besteld. Kantoren zouden leeglopen omdat iedereen van thuis uit zou werken. Ik neem deze drie voorbeelden omdat ze 20 jaar terug werden geprojecteerd op de periode waarin we nu leven en ze nu weer worden aangehaald voor de periode 2025-2030. Als je dagelijks geconfronteerd wordt met nieuwe technologie, is een extrapolatie van al dat moois naar een nieuwe maatschappijbeeld een aanlokkelijke gedachte. Alleen merk ik, dat als ik bij familie en vrienden aanklop met een toekomstbeeld waarin de job van een arts binnen 15 à 20 jaar sterk veranderd is en voor een belangrijk stuk door technologie is vervangen, te horen krijg: "zo snel zal dat niet veranderen. Dat zeiden ze van de ... ook."
Kaku noemt dat het holbewonersprincipe. De moderne mens bestaat zo'n 100 000 jaar. Een fysieke ontmoeting tussen mensen biedt soms meer voldoening dan een videoconferentie, ook al bespaar je daarmee uren tijd. Je kan via internet of met een oculus de Eiffeltoren vanuit alle hoeken bekijken, maar dat is niet hetzelfde als er echt opstaan. Een universitair diploma wordt door veel werkgevers nog steeds hoger ingeschat dan één dat on-line werd behaald.
