Met als vader een Roemeense generaal was het levenspad van Henri Coanda vanaf de geboorte bezegeld. Na zijn opleiding aan de militaire school vertoefde hij 2 jaar in België aan het Montefiore Instituut van de Universiteit Luik. Daar kwam hij in contact met de Italiaanse vliegtuigbouwer Gianni Caproni, in wie zijn atelier hij zijn eerste vliegtuig bouwde, de Coanda-1910. Bij testen met dit prototype vliegtuig stelde hij vast dat de omgevingslucht zich als het ware 'vastkleeft' aan de convexe wanden in plaats van een rechte lijn te volgen. Door vleugels immers een convexe vorm te geven, wordt de luchtstroom, die het vleugeloppervlak volgt, naar beneden afgebogen. Dit resulteert in een tegengestelde opwaartse kracht die bijdraagt aan het vliegvermogen.
De menselijke geest zit soms raar in mekaar. Ik moest terugdenken aan dit Coanda-effect toen ik vorige week een artikel las over strategische tegenpolen. De organisatie daarentegen heeft, Coanda-gewijs, bij elke hindernis en opportuniteit de neiging om af te buigen. De stroming van leider en team verloopt zo niet meer parallel, met veel efficiëntieverlies tot gevolg. Je kan het Coanda effect in organisaties niet negeren...
Daar tegenover staan organisaties waarbij de leider elke hindernis of opportuniteit op de weg volgt. Het coanda-effect heeft echter zijn beperkingen. Als de 'Angle of Attack' (zie figuur) te groot wordt, kan de organisatie niet meer volgen. Het resultaat zijn diverse wervelingen die het vliegtuig in gevaar brengen. Het doel is dan ook ver weg...
Je hebt echter ook organisaties die zich onbewust goed bewust zijn van dit Coanda-effect. Ze gebruiken elke hindernis en opportuniteit die zich voordoet in hun voordeel om sneller hun doelstellingen te bereiken. Ze voorzien wat 'deflectoren' op de hindernis waardoor de organisatie (luchtstroom) in de goede richting wordt gestuurd en bijkomend nog meer draagvlak (lift) creëert. Ze beseffen dat verandering en innovatie een continu proces is en geen jaarlijkse momentopname...
